Introduction

New Orleans is famous for many things: jazz, vibrant nightlife, Mardi Gras, and of course, its mouthwatering cuisine. Among the many dishes that define the city’s culinary landscape, Po’ Boys are a must-try. Like a Philly cheesesteak, a New York bagel, or a Chicago Italian beef, you don’t want to skip this. I would literally eat one every day if they weren’t 5,000 calories (truly, I tried 14 at last year’s Po Boy fest). From seafood to roast beef to breakfast options, there’s a Po’ Boy for every meal and every craving in the Big Easy. From someone who indulges several times a month, here’s a few of my favorites.

What it is

Typically a protein (seafood, meat, or even vegetarian substitutes) deep fried on what can best be described as a sub or hoagie roll, often from this popular local bakery and “dressed” with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayonnaise. Some are fancier with extra fixin’s like bacon.

The most widely accepted origin story of this New Orleans staple dates back to 1929 during a streetcar strike when two brothers and former streetcar conductors (the Martins) offered free sandwiches to striking workers at their restaurant. As the story goes, when one of the striking men would come in, the staff would say “Here comes another poor boy!”

For a Cajun twist on the classic Po’ Boy, Boil Seafood House offers fantastic options loaded with fresh, spicy seafood. Whether you opt for crawfish, shrimp, or catfish, their Po’ Boys are generously filled and packed with bold Louisiana flavors. Serving up a full menu of chargrilled and raw oysters, oversized seafood platters and baskets, this sizeable restaurant with ample indoor and outdoor seating is a prime spot to take groups or sit outside on the balcony and soak up the sun.

Cajun Seafood

Location: Multiple 2730 South Broad Ave. New Orleans, LA 70125

What to order: Soft Shell Crab Po Boy, N’awlins style – served on famous Leidentheimer’s french baked bread and fully dressed, this no frills classic leaves space for the joint’s specialty and namesake – seafood, to shine.

With locations across the city, this local favorite offers a variety of seafood including shrimp, fish, and oyster Po’ Boys, alongside the classics like ham, roast beef, hamburger and sausage. Their affordable prices and primarily take-out, fast food service model make it a great option for a quick and satisfying meal.

Camellia Grill

Location: 626 S Carrollton Ave New Orleans, LA  70118

What to order: If you’re in the mood for a breakfast twist on the traditional Po’ Boy, Camellia Grill has an amazing bacon egg and cheese option that’s a close rival to my #1 favorite Po’ Boy.

This classic Southern-style diner serves up delicious burgers, omelettes, and classic diner fare. Originally opened in 1946, the restaurant has a self-proclaimed legacy of racial equity during a time when tensions were notoriously high. Like many local institutions, this family-owned establishment shuttered after Katrina but reopened under new ownership at the community’s imploration, and continues to be a neighborhood anchor. Conveniently located right off the Carrollton streetcar, they’re also open early until late, making it a prime spot to nurse a hangover or enjoy a late night meal.

Domilise’s Po-Boy & Bar

Location: 5240 Annunciation St, New Orleans, LA 70115

What to order: Their oyster Po’ Boy is a standout, golden fried and served on Leidenheimer bread.

A family-run institution for over a century, Domilise’s Po-Boy & Bar serves up some of the best sandwiches in town. The no frills intimate spot has an old-school feel, making the dining experience just as memorable as the food. With limited seating indoors and out, you can also take your sandwich to go and enjoy a scenic lunch at Audubon Park just a brief mile walk away.

Killer Po’ Boys

Location: Multiple, 811 Conti St, New Orleans, LA 70112 (located inside Erin Rose bar, my personal preference)

What to order: Dark & Stormy Pork Belly Po Boy, stuffed with tender pork loin, smothered in NOLA Rum ginger glaze, lime slaw and topped with creamy garlic aioli, this gourmet take on an old classic does not disappoint.

Pro Tip: Erin Rose’s frozen Irish coffee is a must-try!

Housed in a single family home built over 100 years ago, this Irish pub is a hidden gem in the French Quarter. Home to Killer Po’ Boys, a small but mighty eatery serving innovative takes on the classic sandwich, their menu includes options like glazed pork belly and shrimp Po’ Boys, all crafted with high-quality ingredients and bold flavors. The central location makes it an optimal spot to take visitors or grab a late night snack.

Mahony’s Po-Boys

Location: 3454 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70115

What to order: Stuffed with fried oysters, bacon, and cheddar cheese, served on Leidenheimer french bread, Mahoney’s award-winning Peacemaker is one of the most decadent Po’ Boys you’ll find in New Orleans.

The popular neighborhood spot recently reopened under new ownership by the proprietors of the French Quarter’s Will and the Way, a casual pub with eclectic bar fare and celiac-friendly menu. This cozy family-friendly restaurant offers indoor or covered outdoor seating, full bar with frequent drink specials and rotating food specials, If you’re looking for something comfortable and indulgent, Mahoney’s is the place to go.

*Gluten-friendly options: while they don’t have a fully gluten-free po’ boy, they do offer a dedicated deep fryer and GF batter. If your GF or Celiac you can BYO bread or order one of their fried baskets to go and make your own sandwich at home (as we often do for my partner who has Celiac disease!)

Mother’s Restaurant

Location: 401 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA 70130

What to order: Their debris (shredded roast beef) Po’ Boy is iconic, dripping with flavorful juices and packed with tender meat.

One of the most famous places for a Po’ Boy in New Orleans, Mother’s has been serving up its sandwiches since 1938. A diner-like shop open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While they have ample indoor seating, there’s always a long line, but rest assured—it’s worth the wait.

Parasol’s

Location: 2533 Constance St, New Orleans, LA 70130

What to order: Their firecracker shrimp po boy is literally one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. Juicy deep fried shrimp smothered in what I can only assume is proprietary hot sauce, served on fresh crusty bread and fully dressed. I typically prefer mine with a white cheese like Provolone or white American.

Pro Tip: Don’t miss their frozen Irish Coffee while you’re there.

Located in the Irish Channel and so divey they don’t have a website, just a Facebook page, this takes the top spot on my list. They offer carryout or dine-in with ample outdoor seating or grab a spot at their dog-friendly bar.

Parkway Bakery and Tavern

Location: 538 Hagan Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119

What to order: My personal favorite is the award winning James Brown that combines home-grown Louisiana fried shrimp, mouthwatering and tender slow cooked BBQ brisket, balanced with hot pepper jack cheese and spicy mayo.

Known for its extensive menu and a favorite among both locals and visitors, Parkway Bakery & Tavern serves up everything from seafood and meat, sausage, meatballs, and even vegetarian meat options, which can be challenging to find. The atmosphere is as inviting as the food, making it a must-visit destination. Located just off the Lafitte Greenway, the neighborhood staple offers limited indoor bar seating and ample open-air, covered outdoor seating.

Tracey’s Original Irish Channel Bar

Location: 3226 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70115

What to order: My personal favorite is the fried oyster Po’ Boy, fully dressed with Swiss cheese.

Historically situated in the Irish Channel, Tracey’s recently reopened in a new location just blocks away from the original on Magazine Street. A relaxed pub vibe with surprisingly delicious bar food and family/dog-friendly atmosphere, Tracey’s is an ideal spot to watch a game or grab drinks with friends. Known for their roast beef and fried seafood, they also serve up crawfish boils all season long. Grab a cold beer and enjoy one of their overstuffed sandwiches while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
